Science – sound!

The task: to make a an instrument which produces 4 notes of  different pitches. I asked them to make sure that these notes either ascended or descended.

This scientific activity was designed to test the children`s understanding of how sound is made and how the pitch of a sound can be altered. The scientific discussions that took place demonstrated the children`s understanding that: some materials are better than others at causing vibrations; that the tautness and thickness of a material affects the sound produced and the proximity of the `strings` to the base of the instrument also affects the sound.
